Salt Beer Factory
Salt Beer Factory is Ossett Brewery’s flagship taproom and entertainment venue in Saltaire, West Yorkshire. They needed a very specific hygienic flooring solution where the aesthetics were as important as the construction.

Hexagon Ceramic Tiles, Ucrete, Resin
The complex refurbishment saw a Grade II listed Edwardian tram shed developed into a brand-new concept showcase brewery, which includes the Taproom, live music space, wood-fired pizza oven, gift shop and DJ booth. At an investment of £1.7million, it was essential that its flooring looked great and was designed and built to last.
Aesthetically pleasing flooring
Inside Salt Beer Factory, members of the public sit and eat within arms' length of the brew house – aesthetics of the flooring was as important as its functional benefits. The premises of the Salt Beer Factory had an original suspended concrete slab floor with a void. Built over 100 years ago, this obviously brought with it a number of challenges in terms of civil engineering work and meant that a very specific hygienic flooring solution was required.
Custom designed drainage solutions
Kemtile's experience and expertise was essential to overcome the very tricky – and so important - drainage requirements of this project. It designed and installed 8m bespoke stainless-steel drainage channels in the floor void as this is where the connections had to be located. The Kemtile team them covered the concrete screed with 150m2 of Kagetec hexagonal ceramic tiling – to Ossett brewery’s own design - and then resin rendered the intricate bund wall and coving in a complementary grey shade. A further 120m2 of Ucrete was also installed in the cold store area.
Jamie Lawson, owner of Ossett Brewery, said: “Kemtile was involved in the project right from the start. The team visited the site and met with us on a number of occasions and came up with some practical solutions throughout the project. They also met with our other contractors to ensure that all parties had a full understanding of the flooring system and how it will work and impact on other areas. After all, everything will be built upon it. It was important that it was right, first time.
“I genuinely felt that at every stage of the project – from initial designs, through to installation and then post-completion – Kemtile went the extra mile to ensure that our demands and the intricacies of the job were met. As the project developed, we made some amends to our brief as our requirements changed, but nothing was ever too much trouble for Kemtile. They were hugely responsive and adaptable and amended designs, schedules and plans to meet our needs.
“The flooring not only looks superb, but it's able to withstand the rigours of a heavy-duty brewing environment – two essential requirements that few companies can meet.”
Experts in brewery flooring
Kemtile's David Priest said: “We're in an enviable position of being the partner of choice for many of the UK’s brewers. It's been hard-earned and founded on our expertise, attention to detail and sheer skill of our installation teams. We were delighted that Ossett Brewery chose us for its Salt Beer Factory project, which heralds such an exciting time in its strategic expansion.”
